A drug is a substance that modifies a physiological function by interacting with proteins in the body. This is the overarching concept of all medicine. Following their absorption into the bloodstream, these substances attach to specific proteins, which modifies the way cells function somewhat. Anticancer medications, for instance, attach to proteins on the surface of cancer cells, stimulating the cells’ demise. In this instance, the drug’s physiological function is cell death. Side effects arise because no medication is designed to specifically interact with a single type of cell or protein. Using an anticancer treatment as an example once more, the drug attaches itself to cells that divide quickly, such as cancer cells. However, hair cells also divide quickly, which is why hair loss is a side effect of anticancer medications.
